ROUND 5 - RIDDLE

RIDDLE

I am a dense, white, fibrous connective tissue.

I am avascular, meaning I have no blood supply of my own.

I cover the ends of bones where they meet in a joint.

I reduce friction and act as a shock absorber.

Who am I?

ANSWER: Cartilage

EXPLANATION:

Cartilage is the connective tissue that provides support and cushioning to joints.

It is avascular, relying on diffusion for its nutrient supply.

NOTE: The cartilage covering the ends of bones at joints is hyaline cartilage, which is glassy and bluish-white; dense white fibrous tissue usually describes tendons and ligaments.

PRACTICE QUESTIONS

1. RIDDLE:

I am a cell.

I am found in a connective tissue.

I sit in a small space called a lacuna.

I make a matrix of collagen and proteoglycans.

I get my food by diffusion, since my tissue has no blood vessels.

My name comes from the Greek word "chondros".

Who am I?

ANSWER: CHONDROCYTE

EXPLANATION:

Chondrocytes are cartilage cells.

2. RIDDLE:

I am a membrane.

I am dense connective tissue.

I surround most cartilage.

I contain blood vessels.

Nutrients diffuse from me into the cartilage.

My name means "around cartilage".

Who am I?

ANSWER: PERICHONDRIUM

EXPLANATION:

The perichondrium surrounds cartilage and supplies it by diffusion.

3. RIDDLE:

I am a type of cartilage.

I am the most common type.

I look glassy and bluish-white.

I cover the ends of bones at joints.

I form the rings of the trachea and the tip of the nose.

Most of the embryo's skeleton is first made of me.

Who am I?

ANSWER: HYALINE CARTILAGE

EXPLANATION:

Hyaline cartilage is the glassy articular cartilage.

4. RIDDLE:

I am a type of cartilage.

I look yellowish.

I contain a network of elastin fibres.

I bend and spring back into shape.

I support the epiglottis.

I shape the outer ear.

Who am I?

ANSWER: ELASTIC CARTILAGE

EXPLANATION:

Elastic cartilage is found in the outer ear and epiglottis.

5. RIDDLE:

I am a type of cartilage.

I am the toughest type.

I contain thick bundles of collagen.

I resist compression.

I form the menisci of the knee and the pubic symphysis.

I form the intervertebral discs.

Who am I?

ANSWER: FIBROCARTILAGE

EXPLANATION:

Fibrocartilage forms intervertebral discs.

6. RIDDLE:

I am a connective tissue.

I am dense and fibrous.

I am slightly elastic.

I hold joints together.

I am torn in a sprain.

I join bone to bone.

Who am I?

ANSWER: LIGAMENT

EXPLANATION:

Ligaments join bone to bone.

7. RIDDLE:

I am a connective tissue.

I am dense, white and fibrous.

I hardly stretch.

I pass the pull of a muscle on to a bone.

The Achilles is the strongest of my kind.

I join muscle to bone.

Who am I?

ANSWER: TENDON

EXPLANATION:

Tendons join muscle to bone.

8. RIDDLE:

I am a liquid.

I am thick, like egg white.

I am secreted by the membrane lining a joint capsule.

I lubricate the joint.

I nourish the articular cartilage.

I fill freely movable joints.

Who am I?

ANSWER: SYNOVIAL FLUID

EXPLANATION:

Synovial fluid lubricates joints and nourishes articular cartilage.

9. RIDDLE:

I am a class of vertebrates.

My members are fish.

My members have no swim bladder.

My members have tooth-like placoid scales.

My members' skeleton is made of cartilage, not bone.

Sharks and rays belong to me.

Who am I?

ANSWER: CHONDRICHTHYES

EXPLANATION:

Chondrichthyes are the cartilaginous fishes.
