QUESTION

Name the structure that acts as a barrier and prevents the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the human heart.

ANSWER: The (cardiac) septum

EXPLANATION

It's a solid muscular wall dividing the heart into left and right sides — the interatrial septum separates the two atria, and the interventricular septum separates the two ventricles — keeping oxygenated blood on the left side separate from deoxygenated blood on the right.

PRACTICE QUESTIONS

1. Name the four chambers of the human heart.

ANSWER: Two atria and two ventricles.

2. What type of muscle forms the heart?

ANSWER: Cardiac muscle.

3. Which vessels supply the heart muscle with blood?

ANSWER: The coronary arteries.

4. Name the valves between the atria and the ventricles.

ANSWER: The tricuspid valve on the right and the bicuspid (mitral) valve on the left.

5. Name the two semilunar valves.

ANSWER: The pulmonary valve and the aortic valve.

6. What are the chordae tendineae?

ANSWER: Tendons that stop the atrioventricular valves from turning inside out.

7. Which structure is the natural pacemaker of the heart?

ANSWER: The sinoatrial (SA) node.

8. What causes the sounds of the heartbeat?

ANSWER: The closing of the heart valves.

9. Which chamber has the thickest wall?

ANSWER: The left ventricle.

10. What is double circulation?

ANSWER: Blood passes through the heart twice in each complete circuit of the body.

11. What is the pericardium?

ANSWER: The membrane that surrounds the heart.

12. How is cardiac output calculated?

ANSWER: Stroke volume multiplied by heart rate.
